A look back at changing technology and its effect on personnel safety.

Throughout history and its many battles civilized man has grown in many ways. We have learned to make better tactical decisions and we have created more sophistcated weapons, each more terrifying then the last. For instance, the creation of the first cannon led to the idea of bigger more powerfull weapons such as artillery cannons, then to ship based artillery weapons and eventually leading to the creation of nuclear warheads that could be fired from many regular artillery emplacements. But with these improvements and new ideas also comes something much more significant to human beings as a whole, improved safety and realiability, meaning that every soldier and civillian can be better protected. What I mean by this is we now have bullet proof vests that can stop armor peircing rounds, planes that, with the inclusion of Stealth Material, are invisible to radar, UAVs and the Predator Drones employed by the airforce that remove pilots from the cockpit and so many more new technologies that help protect our country and save lives at the same time.
I have always loved history and although it is one of the darkest periods, I have always been facinated with learning about World War Two. Learning about every battle, every front, every technological advancement, every piece of this giant puzzle in which culminated into the bloodiest period of time in modern history. However, as I have learned more and more about the way battles were fought I have begun to see how the technology at the time really limited the safety of the soldiers and anyone involved.
So this is where my inspiration for this blog draws from, the comparison of how reliability, safety, effectiveness and the amount of lives that are spared and taken by military technology of both past and present, mainly focusing on WWII and our more current conflicts such as the Gulf War and our presence in Iraq. I want to try and pick a different type of equiptment for each blog to focus on, be it planes, guns, tanks, medical techniques, submarines, aircraft carriers and many more.
As for sources I have set up a few RSS feeds already, these include:
• DefenseTech.org –I chose this source because it reports on current military and defense technologies and advancements and should give me a good basis to compare older technology.
• Flightglobal.com-This source keeps up with currents news and stories that pretain to aviation both military and civilian, which constitutes the main bulk of my interest in military technology and will be a prominent theme throughout my blog.
• BBC.com-I prefer the BBC over the New York Times when it comes to news because it provides a broader view to the world, from more then just an American journalist, and usually has more comprehensive information.
• AirforcePundit.blogspot.com- I found this as a front line source, from someone in the airforce that can first hand accounts, as he is going to iraq as a new second lieutenant.
Many other sources will be added as my blog grows, and as I learn more. I hope that anyone who reads this will find this subject just as faciating as I do, and will continue to learn and help themselves become better historians and have a better understanding of what is happening in our very small world. Stay tuned for more to come.
